Melbourne Wedding Photographer – A Complete Guide

Planning a wedding is exciting, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming. One of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right wedding photographer — the person responsible for capturing memories you’ll look back on for the rest of your life.

My name is Widi, the photographer behind WIDFOTO, and I’ve been photographing weddings in Melbourne for almost a decade. My first wedding was in August 2016, and since then I’ve photographed just over 100+ weddings and pre-wedding sessions across Melbourne and beyond.

In this guide, I’ll share my experience as a Melbourne wedding photographer, along with tips that will help you get the most out of your wedding photography.

My Journey as a Melbourne Wedding Photographer

Before I started photographing weddings, I worked as an event photographer for a magazine. During those assignments, I realised something special: photographing people — especially couples — felt the most meaningful.

Weddings bring together love, family, laughter, and sometimes happy tears, and capturing those genuine emotions is incredibly satisfying.

Over the years I’ve learned that couples don’t just want beautiful photos. They want photos that feel real.

That’s why my approach is calm and relaxed. Instead of forcing poses, I focus on capturing moments as they naturally unfold.

My Wedding Photography Style

If I had to describe my style in two words, it would be:

Documentary and candid.

I believe weddings are full of authentic moments that don’t need to be staged. My goal is to quietly observe and capture the real emotions of the day.

Photo Session: Where Creativity Happens

My favourite moment is the couple photo session. This is when we can slow down and create images that feel romantic, artistic, and personal.

I usually give minimal direction — simple things like holding hands, chatting with each other, or making eye contact. This helps couples look natural while still creating beautiful compositions.

To me, a timeless wedding photo is simply this:

A moment where two people genuinely express their love for each other.

Why Melbourne Is an Amazing City for Weddings

One of the reasons I love working here is that Melbourne offers incredible variety for wedding photography.

The city has:

  • historic architecture

  • modern cityscapes

  • vineyards and countryside

  • coastal views

This means couples can have completely different wedding experiences depending on their venue.

My Favourite Wedding Venue

One venue I always enjoy photographing is Jack Rabbit Vineyard.

It has everything a photographer could ask for:

  • vineyards

  • ocean views

  • beautiful interiors

  • stunning outdoor ceremony spots

And the food is amazing too — which definitely helps the atmosphere!

Most Photogenic Wedding Region

In my opinion, the most photogenic wedding region near Melbourne is the Yarra Valley.

The rolling vineyards, soft hills, and sunset light create an incredible backdrop for wedding photos.

If you're getting married in the city, one location couples often overlook is the Southbank Promenade.

From there you can capture the Melbourne skyline as a dramatic backdrop — especially beautiful at sunset or night.

Melbourne Weather and Wedding Photography

Melbourne weather can be unpredictable, but honestly, it rarely ruins photos.

Even if it rains lightly, beautiful photos are still possible — sometimes rain actually adds atmosphere.

My advice is simple:

Always prepare a Plan B location such as:

  • a covered walkway

  • indoor ceremony backup

  • shaded architecture

As long as couples don’t mind getting a little bit wet, we can still capture something special.

Real Wedding Moments That Stay With Me

After photographing nearly 100 weddings, some moments are unforgettable.

One wedding in the Yarra Valley stands out. The couple asked for a photo in front of the chapel late at night when it was completely dark.

It seemed impossible at first, but with creative lighting the result turned out amazing — one of those photos that feels almost cinematic.

Another common experience is couples telling me:

“We don’t know what to do in front of the camera.”

But after the session, they often say how relaxed and fun it was. With a little guidance, couples quickly forget about the camera and just enjoy the moment together.

Some of the most emotional moments for me as a photographer are:

  • the first dance

  • exchanging vows

Those moments often bring tears — not only for the couple, but sometimes for the photographer too.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer

If you’re searching for a Melbourne wedding photographer, here are a few important things to consider.

1. Choose a Style You Love

Look at the photographer’s portfolio and ask yourself:

Do these photos feel like us?

Every photographer has a different style, and it’s important that their work matches what you want.

2. Personality Matters

Your photographer will spend many hours with you on your wedding day.

Choosing someone calm, relaxed, and helpful can make a huge difference to the experience.

3. Find Someone Who Truly Cares

A great photographer doesn’t just show up on the day. They care about the entire process — from the first meeting to delivering the final images.

Communication, reliability, and attention to detail are just as important as photography skills.

When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer?

In Melbourne, popular dates — especially in spring and summer — get booked quickly.

Ideally, couples should secure their photographer at least 12 months in advance.

How to Get Natural Wedding Photos

The best photos happen when couples simply enjoy being together.

During sessions I might suggest simple things like:

  • holding hands

  • walking together

  • having a quiet conversation

  • making eye contact

These natural interactions create genuine chemistry in photos.

And honestly, eye contact is one of the most powerful things in wedding photography.

Wedding Photographer Prices in Melbourne

Wedding photography pricing can vary depending on the photographer and the coverage.

From my experience, typical wedding photography in Melbourne ranges between:

$1,680 – $3,270

Prices usually depend on:

  • number of coverage hours

  • whether albums are included

  • travel requirements

Remember that photography is one of the few things from your wedding day that lasts forever.

Years later, you’ll open your wedding album and relive those moments again.

A Simple Wedding Photography Timeline

A typical wedding photography schedule might look like this:

Getting Ready – 60 minutes each
First Look (optional) – 15–20 minutes
Ceremony – around 30 minutes
Family Photos – 30 minutes
Couple Photo Session – 45–60 minutes
Reception Coverage – speeches, cake cutting, first dance, farewell

For the best portraits, the ideal time is 1–2 hours before sunset, also known as golden hour.

My Professional Wedding Setup

On a wedding day I always come prepared.

My equipment includes:

  • 2 full-frame Canon cameras

  • 6 professional Canon L-series lenses

  • speedlights

  • multiple memory cards

  • tripod and backup gear

Having two cameras ensures there is always a backup ready.

The day before the wedding I charge batteries, clean my gear, review the run sheet, and make sure everything is prepared so the day runs smoothly.

My Advice for Couples

If I could give couples one piece of advice for their photos, it would be this:

Look at each other. Eye contact shows connection, emotion, and chemistry — and those are the moments that make photos timeless.
